• Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential to human health.
  • Our body cannot produce Omega-3’s so we must obtain them from our food
  • The 3 main types of Omega-3’s are:
    • Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA)
    • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
    • Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

• ALA is present in some plant foods (flaxseed, walnuts, canola oil)
• DHA and EPA are present in fish (sardines, mackerel, tuna, salmon, trout, herring, anchovies) and their oils
  • Note: Fish themselves do not synthesize omega-3’s — they accumulate omega-3’s in their tissues by eating micro-algae & phytoplankton, which synthesize them
• The human liver can convert ALA into EPA and DHA, but this conversion is limited (less than 15%). This is why we must eat EPA & DHA sourced foods or take a dietary supplement, to increase our Omega-3 levels.
